“Echoes of the Past, Hopes for the Future: An Evening with the Gullah Geechee” is an exceptional event curated by Öykü Canlı, who serves as both the artistic director and production manager, alongside Pedro Vargas, theater director, and event manager. This event is a vibrant tribute to the Gullah Geechee heritage, celebrating the deep roots and vibrant spirit of the Gullah Geechee nation.
The event aims to educate and promote justice for the Gullah Geechee people, whose lineage and culture stretch across the coasts of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Jasmin Frink, a proud descendant of the Gullah Geechee, contributes to the event, providing insights and cultural heritage to guide the celebration, making it an authentic and profound acknowledgment of this obscured culture to the world.
The event, held on November 17th, 2023, at the American Church in Paris, will feature captivating music performances, showcasing the soulful sounds that have influenced genres from Gospel to Rock’n Roll. Furthermore, a digitally curated “Gullah Exhibition” will take the audience on a visual journey through the history and art of this fascinating culture. Guests will also have the chance to explore an arts and crafts exhibition, celebrating the craftsmanship and creativity of the Gullah Geechee people. Additionally, the evening will offer a taste of authentic Gullah recipes, allowing guests to savor the flavors of this rich culinary tradition. This unique event is a collaboration of art professionals, driven by the conviction that performing arts management can be used to preserve cultural heritage and revise history.
The event is dedicated to celebrating the rich culture of the Gullah Geechee people, who have preserved their unique heritage along the coasts of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Special guests, including talented artists and performers from within the Gullah Geechee community, as well as collaborations with local entrepreneurs showcasing Gullah Geechee products, will make this an unforgettable evening. This event is an educational journey, inviting all to explore the depths of a culture that has thrived against the odds, maintaining its identity and spirit through generations.
Inés Matady: Inés Matady, our event’s Musical Director, began her music career at 7 and joined the Paris Conservatoire’s Jazz Department in 2018. A talented singer and violinist, Inés curated the event’s music, gathering together Miss Maddly, Wolwang Valburn, Shirley Soa blending traditional ring shout with contemporary pieces influenced by Gullah traditions. Her expertise was key in assembling our performers and crafting a diverse musical experience.
Syamka: Syamka is a soulful and powerful voice with sounds that fuse Neo-Soul, R&B, Caribbean and Hip-Hop styles. Using her looper, she plays with the architecture of her pieces. Going from singing to rap, in French, in Creole or even in English, Syamka has a unique universe that can bring together generations, genres and cultures.
Abeena of Naturally Geechee: Abeena introduces guests to the Gullah Geechee’s natural wellness traditions with her line of herbal-based skincare products, showcasing the community’s deep-rooted herbal practices.
Mahoganee Amiger: Visual artist, musician, and poet Mahoganee Amiger shares her artistic vision, offering attendees a glimpse into the vibrant spirit and cultural depth of the Gullah Geechee.
Khetnu Nefer: Highlighting the holistic health practices of the Gullah community, Khetnu Nefer shares her expertise in herbal wellness, emphasizing the Gullah Geechee’s connection to natural healing.
Sabree’s Art Gallery: Through a digital exhibition, Sabree’s Art Gallery presents the compelling art of the Gullah Geechee, enriching the evening with a visual exploration of their culture and history.
